Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (SLL) is a naturally derived anionic emulsifier made from lauric acid (typically from coconut or other vegetable oils) and lactic acid. It stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions and is prized for the light, smooth, conditioning skin feel it lends to creams, lotions and serums.

What sets it apart is that it forms lamellar (liquid-crystal) structures that echo the skin’s own lipid organization, so it both emulsifies and contributes a biomimetic, velvety feel. It is mild enough for sensitive-skin and baby-care formats, readily biodegradable and well suited to natural / COSMOS-style positioning, and carries useful antimicrobial activity that can help support a preservative system. How It Works

SLL is amphiphilic — a lipophilic lauroyl (C12) tail from lauric acid joined to a hydrophilic lactylate head from lactic acid. In water it self-assembles into lamellar liquid-crystal layers that wrap oil droplets in multiple sheets and form a three-dimensional network in the water phase, stabilizing the emulsion and building viscosity. Because those lamellar layers mirror the skin’s own lipid bilayers, the resulting emulsions feel light and conditioning. The same surfactant nature underlies its antimicrobial behavior: it disrupts microbial cell membranes — an effect characterized at the molecular level in recent biophysical studies — which is why it can reinforce a preservative system.

Formulating with Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate

Typically used at about 0.5–5%, SLL serves as a primary or co-emulsifier in oil-in-water systems and as a mild surfactant in gentle cleansers. It pairs well with co-emulsifiers and fatty thickeners to build robust lamellar emulsions and, as a naturally derived material, suits clean / natural briefs. Optimize the overall emulsifier system for your oil phase and pH, and confirm both stability and preservation efficacy in the finished formula.

Safety Analysis

Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate is a naturally derived emulsifier with a well-documented safety profile: the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed alkyl lactylate salts, including Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, as safe for use in cosmetics at typical concentrations (about 0.5–5%). It is generally mild and well tolerated — including in sensitive-skin and baby-care formats — and is readily biodegradable. As an anionic surfactant it can be mildly irritating at high levels, so observe sensible use levels and, as always, substantiate the safety of the finished formula (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
