Silica (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) is a naturally occurring inorganic mineral widely used in cosmetic formulations for its exceptional oil-absorbing, texturizing, and optical-diffusing properties. In skincare, cosmetic-grade silica is typically engineered into amorphous, spherical, or porous particles that improve sensory performance without penetrating the skin barrier. These structures allow silica to absorb excess sebum, reduce surface shine, and create a smooth, matte finish. In hair care, silica functions primarily as a volume-enhancing and sensory-modifying agent. When incorporated into shampoos, dry shampoos, and styling products, silica helps reduce oil buildup at the scalp, enhances hair body, and improves grip without excessive residue. Unlike film-forming polymers, silica does not coat the hair shaft continuously, allowing for a lighter feel and improved styling flexibility.
