SalScent® is a fragrance encapsulation technology based on a polymeric composite system designed to entrap fragrance or essential oil molecules within microscopic porous structures. Formulated with polymers such as PVP and Hydroxypropylcellulose alongside solubilizing components like C12-15 Pareth-12 and Dipropylene Glycol, the system forms sub-micron spheres capable of absorbing and stabilizing hydrophobic functional oils.
During mixing, fragrance molecules are absorbed into the porous polymer core through thermodynamic interactions, after which a hydrated polymer shell entraps the oil phase to create a stable encapsulated structure. This architecture protects volatile aroma compounds from premature evaporation while enabling controlled diffusion of fragrance over time.
Upon application, the encapsulated fragrance remains stable within the polymer matrix until environmental triggers initiate release. As the solvent evaporates, polymer chains move closer together and the encapsulated oils become physically entrapped within the polymer network. Fragrance molecules are then gradually released through diffusion driven by concentration gradients between the microsphere interior and the surrounding environment. Exposure to moisture, such as humidity or perspiration, can further accelerate release by promoting hydrolytic erosion of the polymer shell, opening pathways that allow the fragrance to diffuse outward.
In skincare formulations, this raw material enhances the persistence of fragrance in products such as body sprays, lotions, and perfumes without significantly altering formulation clarity or texture. Because fragrance is released gradually, formulators may reduce overall fragrance loading while maintaining perceived intensity, contributing to more cost-efficient formulations. Residual encapsulated fragrance deposited on the hair or skin continues to diffuse gradually and may be reactivated by environmental moisture, helping maintain freshness between washes or throughout the day. The technology is compatible with clear aqueous or hydroalcoholic systems and can be incorporated into leave-on sprays, perfumes, shampoos, conditioners, and other fragrance-containing formulations.
