How It Works

Phenoxyethanol disrupts the cell membranes of microorganisms, interfering with their ability to grow and reproduce; this keeps microbial populations in check throughout a product’s life. Because it is active against a broad range of microbes and stable across pH, it forms the backbone of many preservative systems.

Formulating with Phenoxyethanol

Phenoxyethanol is added to the water phase (it can go in at cool-down) at up to ~1%, frequently paired with a booster such as ethylhexylglycerin for complete coverage. Confirm the finished product passes preservative-efficacy (challenge) testing, and observe good manufacturing practice.
