An All-in-One Cold-Process Thickener & Emulsion Stabilizer

HEA/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer — full INCI Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer — is a pre-neutralized synthetic acrylic copolymer used as a rheology modifier and emulsion stabilizer. It thickens, gels and stabilizes water-based and oil-in-water systems, and is best known by Seppic trade names such as the powder Sepinov™ EMT 10 and the liquid pre-dispersions Simulgel™ NS, Simulgel™ INS 100 and Sepiplus™ S.

Formulators reach for it because it works cold — it disperses and builds viscosity without heating — performs across a wide pH range (roughly 3–12), tolerates electrolytes and ethanol, and can both thicken the water phase and stabilize a sizeable oil phase, all while leaving a light, fresh, non-tacky skin feel and excellent gel clarity. How It Works

It is an anionic, pre-neutralized acrylic copolymer of hydroxyethyl acrylate and sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate. When dispersed in water the polymer chains hydrate, unfurl and swell, entangling into a three-dimensional network that raises viscosity and suspends or gels the phase. Because the polymer is amphiphilic, it also locates at the oil–water interface and forms a stabilizing film around oil droplets — so a single ingredient provides both rheology control and emulsion stabilization, without the heating or high-shear that conventional emulsifiers often require.

Formats & Formulating

It is supplied in two practical forms — a powder (Sepinov™ EMT 10) and liquid pre-dispersions (Simulgel™ NS, Simulgel™ INS 100, Simulgel™ FL and Sepiplus™ S), which are blended with carriers and co-emulsifiers for instant cold dispersion. Add to the water phase under moderate stirring and allow it to hydrate fully; avoid over-shearing once the system has thickened. It is compatible with ethanol and a broad pH range — as with any rheology modifier, confirm performance against high electrolyte loads and strongly cationic systems in your specific formula.

Safety Analysis

Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer is a synthetic rheology / film-forming polymer that is widely used and generally well tolerated in both leave-on and rinse-off cosmetics; ingredient databases list no specific use restriction or notable irritancy concern at typical use levels (about 0.3–3%). As a high-molecular-weight polymer it is not expected to penetrate the skin. Handle the powder grade to minimize airborne dust and disperse it fully. As with any ingredient, brands must substantiate the safety of the finished formula (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
