A Gentle Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) & Humectant

Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) — the gentler, next-generation cousin of alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic acid. It delivers mild exfoliation together with strong humectant hydration, and is prized for being suitable even for sensitive skin.

Because the molecule is larger than an AHA and carries multiple hydroxyl groups, it works more slowly and gently (less irritation) while binding water at the surface. It also has antioxidant and metal-chelating activity, and pairs with sodium benzoate in popular “eco” preservative blends such as Geogard 221.

How It Works

Gluconolactone is the cyclic lactone of gluconic acid. In water it slowly hydrolyzes to gluconic acid, gently lowering pH and loosening the bonds between surface skin cells for mild exfoliation. Its several hydroxyl groups make it strongly humectant (water-binding) and give it antioxidant, metal-chelating behavior — the combination is why PHAs can exfoliate while still supporting the skin barrier.

Formulating with Gluconolactone

Used from about 1% (as a humectant, buffer and preservative-blend partner) up to higher levels for PHA exfoliation, at a mildly acidic pH. It dissolves in the water phase. As a mild acid, keep the finished pH balanced and, for leave-on exfoliating products, pair with sun-protection guidance.

Safety Analysis

Gluconolactone is well tolerated and, as a PHA, is generally gentler than AHAs. It has a long record of safe cosmetic use as a humectant, mild exfoliant and chelating agent. As a mild acid it should be used at a balanced finished pH, and leave-on exfoliating products should carry standard sun-protection guidance. As always, substantiate the finished product’s safety (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
