How It Works

Ethylhexylglycerin is a surfactant-like glyceryl ether. By lowering interfacial tension at microbial cell surfaces it increases the permeability of microbial membranes — which makes co-preservatives such as phenoxyethanol more effective and helps suppress the odor-forming bacteria that deodorants target. Its glyceryl backbone also gives it mild humectant, skin-conditioning behavior.

Formulating with Ethylhexylglycerin

Typically used at about 0.3–1%, it is added to the water or cool-down phase and pairs classically with phenoxyethanol (the two are sold together as blends such as Euxyl PE 9010). Importantly, it is not a standalone preservative — it boosts a preservation system rather than replacing it — so build a complete, challenge-tested preservative system around it.
