CC Sepgel 305

CC Sepgel 305 (often also referenced as Sepigel® 305 or Cosmagel 305) is a multifunctional liquid polymer formulated through inverse emulsion polymerization that functions as a thickening, emulsifying, stabilizing and texturizing agent in cosmetic systems. It is composed primarily of polyacrylamide, C13‑14 isoparaffin, and Laureth‑7, giving it the ability to rapidly develop desirable rheology (viscosity and flow) in both oil‑in‑water (O/W) and water‑in‑oil (W/O) emulsions without the need for pre‑neutralization or high‑temperature processing. This pre‑neutralized, non‑ionic polymer enables formulators to produce smooth, rich creams and lotions with a silky, luxurious skin feel and enhanced spreadability. It is compatible across a wide pH range and integrates with a variety of active classes including AHAs, sunscreens, pigments, and humectants, making it a high‑value formulation tool in advanced skincare manufacturing.

Although primarily leveraged for its texturizing and emulsification benefits, CC Sepgel 305 is also applicable in haircare systems where structural control and sensory quality are important. In shampoo, conditioner, and treatment mask matrices it can help maintain stable emulsions and desirable viscosity profiles while contributing to manageable, non‑greasy finishes. Its ability to emulsify silicones (e.g., dimethicone, cyclomethicone) and high levels of glycerin supports formulation flexibility, especially in lightweight lotions, scalp treatments, and conditioning serums that demand stable delivery of active actives and emollients.

Safety Analysis

Functional Safety & Use Considerations:
CC Sepgel 305 is a synthetic polymer blend used at low concentrations (typically 2–5%) to achieve desired viscosity and stability in emulsions. In terms of safety, polyacrylamide‑based rheology modifiers have been widely adopted in cosmetic formulations because of their inert behavior on the skin surface and excellent compatibility with a broad range of cosmetic ingredients. It does not act as a direct bioactive, and any irritation risk primarily arises from formulation context (e.g., co‑ingredients and pH) rather than the polymer itself.

Formulation & Regulatory Notes:
CC Sepgel 305 is compatible with a wide pH range and both heat and cold processing, offering flexibility in manufacturing. It serves to stabilize emulsions, facilitate integration of silicones or high glycerin content, and enhance sensory attributes like spreadability and smoothness without imparting greasiness. As a functional polymer, it is generally regarded as non‑irritating when properly formulated, and adverse reactions are rare when used within recommended inclusion rates and with appropriate preservation systems.

Patch Testing & Sensitive Skin Lines:
For products intended for sensitive or compromised skin, manufacturers should conduct patch testing and stability evaluations to ensure that the final emulsion maintains integrity and tolerance. The absence of bioactive irritation is complemented by inert texturizing action; however, overall formulation balance (including humectants and barrier repair actives) will determine end‑user comfort.
