Camellia oleifera (tea seed) oil is a light-feel, largely monounsaturated triglyceride oil pressed from the seeds of Camellia oleifera. Its fatty-acid spectrum is dominated by oleic acid (~73–85%), with minor linoleic and palmitic fractions, and it naturally carries lipophilic antioxidants (tocopherols), unsaponifiables (phytosterols), and trace squalene. In cosmetic emulsions and anhydrous systems, this chemistry yields excellent slip, fast spread, and substantive emolliency with comparatively low oxidative instability (lower PUFA content than many seed oils). Functionally, it reduces TEWL by forming a breathable lipid film on the stratum corneum, supports formula rheology in oil phases, and can act as a carrier for oil-soluble actives. The intrinsic antioxidant payload contributes to protection of both the formula (retarding peroxidation) and, to a modest extent, the skin’s surface lipids from oxidative stress.
In hair care, the oil’s high-oleic profile provides surface lubrication to cuticles, lowering fiber–fiber friction and improving combability, softness, and gloss when used in rinse-off conditioners, masks, and leave-ins. As with other cosmetic oils, benefits are primarily physical — film formation and lubrication — rather than true “repair.” Strategically, formulators pair C. oleifera oil with cationic surfactants/polymers to enhance deposition on damaged fibers and with lightweight esters to tune dry-down. For skin, the broader literature on plant oils notes that oleic-rich oils improve emolliency yet may temporarily fluidize stratum-corneum lipid packing in certain contexts; prudent concentration ranges and balanced emulsions mitigate this, making tea seed oil well-suited to normal–dry and mature skin, while acne-prone users may prefer blends with higher linoleic acid.
