How It Works

Benzyl Alcohol disrupts the cell membranes of microorganisms, limiting their growth; its aromatic, mildly lipophilic structure also makes it a useful solvent. It works best in a mildly acidic pH and is often paired with other preservatives (e.g. dehydroacetic acid) for full coverage.

Formulating with Benzyl Alcohol

Benzyl Alcohol is added to the water phase (typically up to ~1%), often with a co-preservative. Note that it is an EU-declared fragrance allergen and must be listed above set thresholds. Confirm challenge-test results and observe good manufacturing practice.

Safety Analysis
