Tromethamine (also called trometamol or “Tris”) is a mild organic base used as a pH adjuster and buffer — most often to neutralize acidic gelling polymers like carbomer so they thicken into clear gels.

Used in small amounts, it fine-tunes and stabilizes a formula’s pH so actives, preservatives and the skin barrier all sit in their ideal range.

How It Works

Tromethamine is a weak base with a buffering hydroxyl-rich structure: added to an acidic gel, it accepts protons and raises pH, which unwinds carbomer’s coiled chains so they swell into a clear, stable gel network; more broadly it holds the formula near its target pH.

Formulating with Tromethamine

Tromethamine is dissolved in the water phase and added at low levels to reach the target pH / neutralize the gelling agent. Adjust to the required pH and observe good manufacturing and preservation practice.

Safety Analysis

Tromethamine is well tolerated at the low levels used for pH adjustment. As always, substantiate the finished product’s safety (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
