The Water-in-Oil Emulsifier

Sorbitan Oleate (Span 80) is a gentle, nonionic emulsifier made from sorbitol and oleic acid, used mainly to build stable water-in-oil emulsions and to co-stabilize creams.

How It Works

Sorbitan Oleate is amphiphilic with a strong preference for oil (low HLB); it sits at the oil–water interface with its tails in the oil phase, wrapping and stabilizing dispersed water droplets so a water-in-oil emulsion stays uniform. It is frequently paired with a polysorbate to tune the emulsion.

Formulating with Sorbitan Oleate

Sorbitan Oleate is used in the oil phase at low to moderate levels, alone for w/o systems or with a higher-HLB co-emulsifier (e.g. Polysorbate 80) for o/w. Observe good manufacturing and preservation practice.

Sorbitan Oleate is well tolerated with a strong record of safe cosmetic use. As always, substantiate the finished product’s safety (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
