How It Works

Polyvinyl Alcohol dissolves in warm water to form a viscous solution; as that solution dries on the skin the polymer chains draw together into a continuous, flexible film that can be peeled away, carrying loose surface debris with it. In lower-solids systems the same chains simply thicken and stabilize the formula.

Formulating with Polyvinyl Alcohol

Polyvinyl Alcohol is dispersed into hot water (it needs heat to fully dissolve) and used across a range of levels — higher for peel-off films, lower as a thickener/stabilizer. It pairs well with humectants and other film formers. Observe good manufacturing and preservation practice.

Safety Analysis

Polyvinyl Alcohol is well tolerated with a strong record of safe cosmetic use. It is non-irritating at typical use levels. As always, substantiate the finished product’s safety (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
