Pinene is a naturally-occurring monoterpene found in the essential oils of pine, citrus, rosemary and many other botanicals. In cosmetics it appears as a component of natural essential oils and fragrance, contributing a fresh, resinous, woody-green scent.

Safety Analysis

Pinene is a fragrance allergen listed in EU Annex III. When a leave-on product contains it above 0.001% (10 ppm) or a rinse-off product above 0.01% (100 ppm), it must be declared by name on the label. Individuals sensitized to fragrance components may react to it. As always, substantiate the finished product’s safety (e.g. patch / HRIPT testing) in line with MoCRA requirements.
