Carbomer is a crosslinked high–molecular-weight poly(acrylic acid) used to build viscosity, form transparent gels, and provide yield value for suspension stability. When neutralized (e.g., with triethanolamine, sodium hydroxide, aminomethyl propanol), the carboxylic acid groups ionize, polymer coils expand by electrostatic repulsion/osmotic swelling, and the network produces pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) flow. In aqueous and hydroalcoholic systems, this translates into fast gel setting, elegant spread, high clarity, and excellent particle suspending power — key for serum gels, peel-off masks, exfoliant dispersions, pigment suspensions, and SPF vehicles. Carbomer’s anionic nature also helps stabilize oil-in-water emulsions by thickening the continuous phase, reducing droplet mobility and creaming without relying solely on surfactant level — useful in low-surfactant, skin-mild formulas.

In shampoos, co-washes, and conditioning cleansers, carbomer tunes viscosity and improves product pickup while minimizing stringiness. In styling gels, it provides the gel matrix and hold profile when used alongside film-formers (e.g., PVP, acrylates copolymers); the polymer delivers quick structure on neutralization and predictable shear response for pumpability and tube fill.
