Trehalose

Trehalose

Trehalose is a naturally occurring disaccharide composed of two glucose molecules, prized for its exceptional water‑binding and protective capabilities in topical formulations. Functioning as a robust humectant, trehalose mimics the skin’s natural moisturizing factors, helping maintain hydration, reinforce the skin barrier, and buffer against environmental stressors such as dryness and oxidative damage. It also imparts antioxidant benefits by scavenging free radicals and regulating antioxidant gene expression, while exhibiting soothing properties suitable for irradiated or sensitive skin.

In haircare, trehalose functions as a conditioning humectant that enhances manageability and resilience—particularly in dry or heat‑exposed hair—by mitigating moisture loss and stabilizing protein structures. Its compatibility with hyaluronic acid enables synergistic long-lasting hydration and barrier reinforcement. Additionally, trehalose has been incorporated into ceramide-based systems to support scalp barrier function and alleviate barrier-compromised conditions like dermatitis or itchiness.

To deliver deep, sustained hydration and barrier fortification while providing antioxidant protection and formulation stability — ensuring skin and hair remain supple, resilient, and balanced.

Formulators commonly include trehalose in hydrating serums, creams, toners, barrier-repair formulations, scalp conditioners, high-performance shampoos, and protective hair treatments—especially those for sensitive, dehydrated, or barrier-compromised skin and hair.

Ideal for brands developing products for dry, mature, sensitive, or reactive skin; formulations for heat-, pollution-, or humidity-challenged hair; and ultra-gentle scalp-care ranges emphasizing barrier support and soothing efficacy.

Safety Analysis

Trehalose exhibits an excellent safety profile for topical cosmetic use. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has deemed it safe at typical usage levels (up to 2%). Its non-irritating nature makes it appropriate for even sensitive or reactive skin types, and no evidence of allergenicity or toxicity has been found in cosmetic contexts. Additionally, its high chemical stability ensures product integrity even under challenging storage or temperature conditions.
