Kojic Acid Dipalmitate

Kojic Acid Dipalmitate (KDP) is a lipophilic, esterified derivative of kojic acid, engineered to enhance its chemical stability, oil solubility, and skin penetration while reducing its known limitations such as low stability and tendency to oxidize. By inhibiting tyrosinase — the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin synthesis — it delivers efficacious brightening, assists in managing hyperpigmentation (e.g., melasma, age spots, post-inflammatory dark spots), and maintains skin tone uniformity with improved tolerability and performance over traditional kojic acid.

Though primarily featured in skincare, KDP’s compatibility with lipid-rich formulations suggests potential for scalp treatments targeting pigmentation issues or scalp tone improvement. Its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, coupled with high oil solubility, make it a promising active in anhydrous or oil-base systems designed to support scalp health and comfort — although this area is yet to be widely documented.

To deliver improved skin brightening and pigmentation control by inhibiting tyrosinase, while providing enhanced formulation stability and compatibility in oil-rich or lipid‑based systems.

Widely incorporated into brightening serums, creams, toners, emulsions, oils, and advanced delivery formats such as nanosomes, liposomes, and nanoemulsions — especially where controlled release and pigment reduction are prioritized.

Ideal for formulators aiming to develop high-performance skin-lightening or brightening products targeting consumers with visible pigmentation, sun or age spots, melasma, or those seeking gentle yet effective options with reduced irritation risk compared to raw kojic acid.

Safety Analysis

Kojic Acid Dipalmitate offers a safer alternative to kojic acid, with significantly improved stability and reduced irritation when used within recommended concentrations (typically 1 – 5%). Kojic acid, at concentrations under 1 – 2%, has been evaluated by the CIR and the EU’s Science Committee and deemed safe, with KDP offering further enhancements in this regard. Although sensitization potential remains low, patch testing is recommended for sensitive users. In the EU, maximum allowable concentrations of kojic acid are being enforced at 1% in leave-on products — making usage of more stable derivatives like KDP particularly advantageous for compliance and effectiveness.
