Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Extract

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a well-characterized unicellular green microalga that synthesizes antioxidant pigments (notably lutein/β-carotene), tocopherols (vitamin E homologs), and protective polysaccharides. Aqueous extracts are typically enriched in high–molecular weight polysaccharides and proteins that provide light film-forming and humectant effects on skin, supporting barrier integrity and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Lipidic fractions (or solubilized extracts) deliver lipophilic antioxidants that scavenge reactive oxygen species generated by pollution and UV exposure, thereby helping limit oxidative cascades linked to erythema, collagen degradation, and uneven tone. In modern cosmeceutical design, these bioactives are leveraged to complement UV filters (non-SPF photoprotection via antioxidation), calm look-of-inflammation, and improve the feel and glide of water-based systems.

In rinse-off and leave-on hair products, C. reinhardtii extracts act primarily as light conditioners and anti-static film formers. Polysaccharide-rich fractions improve fiber slip during wet combing and impart a soft, non-greasy finish, while antioxidant pigments/tocopherols help mitigate free-radical damage from UV, heat styling, and oxidative color processes. On the scalp, antioxidant and soothing activities can aid formulations positioned for comfort and environmental defense without occlusion.

Safety Analysis

Topical microalgal extracts are broadly well tolerated when manufactured to cosmetic-grade standards. Published surveys and reviews of microalgae in cosmetics report low irritation and sensitization potential when formulated at typical use levels. Because carotenoids and tocopherols are oxidation-prone, maintain processing temperatures as low as practical during addition and consider chelators/antioxidant systems to minimize color shift and rancidity.
