Saccharomyces Ferment (sometimes called Saccharomyces cerevisiae Extract or Ferment Filtrate) is obtained by fermenting baker’s yeast and filtering the resulting broth to remove the cells. This process concentrates low‑molecular‑weight peptides, amino acids, nucleotides, vitamins and trace minerals as well as beta‑glucan and other polysaccharides. The blend of humectant molecules and antioxidants makes the extract a versatile cosmetic material. Controlled studies show that topical formulations containing S. cerevisiae extract improve skin hydration and microrelief; after 30 days of daily application, products with 5 % extract enhanced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and skin texture more than a vitamin‑enriched control.
The extract’s composition also provides antioxidant activity and free‑radical scavenging, which help protect the skin from oxidative stress and environmental aggressors. By supplying essential amino acids and stimulating collagen synthesis, yeast ferment derivatives enriched with ions such as silicon or magnesium have been shown to smooth the skin surface, reduce fine lines and improve elasticity. Beta‑glucan and peptides in the ferment soothe irritation and support the skin’s microbiome, making the ingredient suitable for sensitive skin. Some bioferments produced during yeast fermentation contain polyphenols that inhibit tyrosinase and reduce melanin synthesis; a fermentation residue from traditional Korean liquor, for example, displayed competitive inhibition of tyrosinase and suppressed melanin formation in cells and in a clinical whitening study.
Hair‑care benefits are less extensively studied, but the nutrient‑rich profile and humectant character of Saccharomyces ferment make it a useful conditioning ingredient. Yeast‐derived extracts supply B‑group vitamins, amino acids and peptides that nourish the scalp, while humectants help retain moisture and reduce dryness. Products formulated with Saccharomyces ferment are marketed to soothe irritated scalps and strengthen hair fibres. The extract’s antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties may protect follicles from oxidative damage and support healthy hair growth. Manufacturers sometimes combine yeast ferment with minerals (e.g., magnesium ferment) to improve keratin quality and brighten the hair fibre. Because Saccharomyces ferment is derived from fermentation, it also provides prebiotic substrates that can help maintain a balanced scalp microbiota. Taken together, the ingredient serves as a versatile biotechnological additive to improve hydration, texture and resilience of both skin and hair.
