Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil

Prunus armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil is a lightweight, nutrient-rich oil extracted predominantly via cold-pressing from the kernels of apricots. It contains a high concentration of essential unsaturated fatty acids — primarily oleic (omega-9) and linoleic (omega-6) acids — which help reinforce the skin’s lipid barrier and promote ceramide synthesis, enhancing hydration and barrier resilience. The oil also offers a robust profile of antioxidants, including tocopherols, phytosterols, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds, which assist in neutralizing free radicals, inhibiting collagen-degrading enzymes, and mitigating oxidative stress that accelerates skin aging.

In hair care, apricot kernel oil functions as a replenishing agent for the hydrolipidic layer of the scalp and hair shaft, restoring cuticle integrity and shielding against mechanical damage. It adds shine, improves manageability, and supports scalp comfort thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. The antioxidant content may help protect follicles from oxidative stress, while the light texture allows for versatile formulation in conditioners, masks, and scalp treatments without weighing hair down.

Safety Analysis

Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil is generally considered safe and well-tolerated in topical applications. In terms of skin compatibility, it ranks moderately on the comedogenic scale (approximately 2/5), which means it could contribute to pore blockage in acne-prone individuals if used in high concentrations. To minimize risks, formulators often limit usage levels to moderate percentages and combine it with non-comedogenic oils or esters. Stability is best maintained by storing the oil in cool, dark conditions, and a patch test is recommended to rule out rare sensitivities.
