Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax

Carnauba Wax

Carnauba wax is a plant-derived, high–melting point structuring wax obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian palm Copernicia prunifera. In skin formulations it functions as a solid lipid network that raises product hardness, builds viscosity, and forms a flexible, continuous film on the stratum corneum. This film slows transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and improves barrier feel without the greasiness associated with softer waxes. Because of its exceptional melting range (~82–86 °C), it fortifies stick systems (balms, anhydrous salves, sunscreen sticks) against slump, enhances payoff control, and boosts gloss in color cosmetics. These attributes make carnauba a workhorse for premium textures where temperature stability, shine, and wear are critical.

In hair care, carnauba wax provides hold, humidity resistance, and luster by depositing a durable, hydrophobic film along the hair fiber. When combined with oils or film-formers, it stiffens pomades and waxes, improves combing control, and supports anti-frizz performance by reducing fiber-to-fiber friction. In mascaras, it acts as a dispersing aid for pigments, increases viscosity, and raises the heat/water resistance of the film for smudge reduction. Carnauba is typically paired with lower-melting waxes (e.g., beeswax, microcrystalline wax) or polymers to tune rigidity versus flexibility across climates.

Safety Analysis

Regulatory & Use History: Carnauba wax is a long-standing cosmetic ingredient used across eye, lip, and skin categories. Authoritative industry assessments describe cosmetic waxes — including carnauba — as safe in the present practices of use and concentration. Additionally, plant waxes are generally non-sensitizing and non-irritating; adverse reactions are uncommon and typically associated with individual sensitivities.
